UEC Roofed Toastrack #43

2 september 2017 - Douglas, Harris Promenade. Widoczny pan w kamizelce odblaskowej to konduktor, który sprzedaje bilety, daje sygnał do odjazdu i w razie potrzeby blokuje ruch uliczny.

Saloon Tram #5

18 june 1976 - Douglas, Isle of Man – MER depot, Derby Castle. A general view of the depot yard. Part of the illuminated ‘Electric Railway’ sign on the hillside above can be seen, also at least three more of those three-way track points than straphan loves so much…….

Saloon Tram #9

18 june 1976 - Douglas, Isle of Man - Derby Castle. Saloon tram 9 stands at the southern terminus of the MER before setting off on its 30km trip to Ramsey. Note the railway-style oil lamp on the rear of the tram – these are retained for safety reasons, in case the electric lights fail in the dark. The Victorian iron and glass canopy covered the terminal tracks of the Douglas horse trams, but was demolished soon afterwards in a mindless act of vandalism.

Milnes Winter Saloon #20

18 june 1976 - Douglas, Isle of Man. Back in the days when the MER still attached goods vans to some of their trams, motor car 20 coasts down from Derby Castle depot to the terminus with postal van 20. Because the tramway runs through a district with poor road access, the tram conductor would empty post boxes on the way and take the letters to the post office.

Saloon Tram #7

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. MER 7 rattles across the depot entrance with a northbound service. Note the narrow 3 feet track gauge and the unusual three-way point. Douglas town can be seen in the background.

Saloon Tram #7

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. MER saloon tram 7 of 1894 coasts down to the terminal sidings from the depot, ready to form the next service to Laxey and Ramsey. The start of the long and steep climb from here to the cliff top can be seen in the background.

Milnes Unvestibuled Saloon #2

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. One of the two original MER trams built in 1893 and still operating today – the oldest in the world still working with their original owner. The ‘Electric Railway’ sign on the hillside above the depot lights up at night and can be seen from all over the town – good publicity and a bit like Hollywood!

Milnes Sunshade #32

12 september 1994 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Strathallan Crescent. The 3 ft gauge Douglas Corporation horse tramway continues (just about) to run every summer, but only with an infrequent service. This is the last original horse tramway still operating in the world. This 1990s view shows cars that are today stored out of use, including ‘turtle-back’ roof saloon car 27 of 1892. The Summerland entertainment complex behind the trams was opened in 1971 but destroyed by fire two years later, killing over 50 people. A portion was later rebuilt, but is now demolished.

Saloon Tram #7

21 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. Inside a Manx electric ‘Tunnel’ car – very cosy! Would you prefer one of these for your journey to work? See http://www.phototrans.eu/14,246345,0.html for a view of the outside of this car. Remember - these are a proper means of transport, and not just museum trams.

English Electric Roofed Toastrack #40

17 september 1986 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Port Jack. Taken immediately after http://www.phototrans.eu/14,239248,0.html, this photo will scare any Health and Safety Inspector! The conductor is working in traditional Manx Electric fashion - he has just stepped out of the motor car to collect fares and issue tickets on the trailer, moving along the footboards and holding on with his free hand, whilst the trams are moving at up to 40km/hour. Scary, when the trams are lurching and swaying in different directions – note how close the buildings are to the track! Small boys often search along the track for dropped coins (and pieces of conductor?).

Milnes Winter Saloon #22

21 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. ‘Winter’ saloon tram #22 of 1899 and open ‘toastrack’ trailer wait to form a service along the 27.5 km interurban line to Laxey and Ramsey. Tickets can either be bought from the office on the right, or from the conductor on the tram (who will sometimes jump from car to car and walk along the side of the open tram whilst it is moving).

Saloon Tram #7

21 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Derby Castle. The Manx Electric railway terminus and horse tram depot just alongside. The track gauge is the same, but there is no connection between the two systems, there was once talk of this. MER #7 and #5 (in the distance) are both ‘Tunnel’ cars of 1894 - so called because they had seats along each side, under the windows (just visible through the open door).

Milnes Sunshade #32

22 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man - Derby Castle. Horse tram #32 at the depot and northern terminus, with similar car #34 peeping out of the shed. This is also the terminus of the Manx Electric Railway. If you look closely, you will see an engine change has taken place since the previous photo! You can also see the conductor collecting fares and issuing tickets, which he does whilst the tram is moving along the street. Trams are shunted here by hand – try doing that with a Konstal or Tatra…….

Milnes Sunshade #32

22 september 1987 - Douglas, Isle of Man – Loch Promenade. Several ‘firsts’ for TWB? The Douglas Horse Tramway has run continually since 1876 along its 2 km route along the sea shore, although it now operates only from April to September. Although historic, it isn’t a museum, but a real transport system - around 40 trams are available for service, but many are not used regularly as they are old and fragile. Most are ‘toastrack’ style, like #32 of 1896 (one of their newer trams) shown here. The engine size is 1 horsepower :-)

17 september 1986 - Dougas, Isle of Man - Port Jack - (Tramwaje Podmiejskie). Winter saloon #22 of 1899 and trailer #40 of 1930 leaving Douglas on a service to Laxey and Ramsey.
