Built 1898 for the City and South London Railway, the first London `tube`, which was originally designed for cable haulage. Opened with electric power, however, and these coaches hauled by small electric locomotives. Withdrawn before 1914.

26 june 2010 - London (GB) – LT Museum. The City and South London Railway is part of today’s Northern Line. It was designed as a cable railway, but a change of plan meant it became the first London ‘tube’ railway with coaches hauled by small electric locomotives. This is an original ‘padded cell’ coach – so named because only tiny windows allow the passengers to see out. Also, the doors were locked between stations! People were allowed to smoke, of course…….
