22 march 2010 - Birmingham, Corporation Street. And this is what developed bus competition looks like in a developed country. On the right we have the incumbent provider on the local market, on the left - a competitor with a little shed in the field and a few little buses which run a suburban service between Birmingham and Oldbury. There is one difference between the UK and the former USSR - the little guys survive mainly on pensioners. Every Briton over 60. gets free bus travel (refunded by the councils), so many of them will use the bus rather than their car even if they own one. And since they can use ANY bus for free, they will get on whatever comes along first. That's why the big providers try to broaden their market by attracting other social groups, whereas the smaller ones prefer to concentrate on pensioners and students.
